Blu-ray, the latest Optical Technology
Blu-ray or Blu-ray Disc (BD) is the latest technology for high quality, amount data, media and HD video. It can store more than four or five than a Dual-layer DVD disc. A single layer Blu-ray Disc can store 25GB of data while dual layer disc can store upto 50GB of Data or Video.
Development: Blu-ray Disc is a trademark of Sony Corporation where blue laser light is used to read or write data to disc. The Blu-ray standard is developed by Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) which consists members from leading computer, electronics & media manufactures like Sony, Panasonic, Phillips, Pioneer, Apple, Dell, HP, Hitachi, JVC, LG, Samsung, Mitsubishi, Sharp, TDK & Thompson. The format was developed to store High Definition (HD) video, for ultimate quality.
Technology: Normally reg laser beam was used to in DVD media to store and read data while blue-violet laser is introduced in the new technology. The blue-violet laser (405nm) has shorter wavelength in comparison to red laser (650nm) thus helping the laser spot with grater precision and store more data in less space even though the size of the disc is similar to CD or DVD. It supports backward compatibility means of types of CD or DVD can be used in Blu-ray drives. Blu-ray players support all industry standard codecs such as MPEG-2 Part 2, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, and SMPTE VC-1 for playing video. Blu-ray uses region code for its discs as well as for players that means a player for a certain region can play discs manufactured for the region only to protect piracy.
Implementation: Sony Corp introduced Blu-ray Disc with the release of PlayStation 3 (PSP 3). All major Hollywood studios are releasing their movies also in Blu-Ray format besides the DVD format. Blu-ray recording software is available from the leading vendors like Sony, CyberLink & InterVideo. Sony even launched camcoder with Blu-ray support for direct recording. Panasonic has launched first portable Blu-ray Disc player.
Innovation: As the technology is it's initial stage, a lot of research going through the member companies in future development of the standard. New from Pioneer is that they have designed disc which can store 500GB of data in 20 data layers. Sharp has developed LCD HDTV with built in Blu-ray Player even to launch HDTV with recorders.
Though a Blu-ray Player is costly than the standard DVD player, but in coming days due to its mass production & acceptability the prices will come down for sure. As till date the technology is used for Video and Data purpose which can be expanded to other fields as well once become a household standard.
